2021 MVP Action Grant Project

Leesville Pond Water Quality Protection and Community-Wide Resiliency Improvements

The project consists of two project initiatives aimed at water quality and ecological improvements. The first initiative focuses on water quality improvements to Leesville Pond through public education and outreach efforts and the second initiative builds upon outcomes of the Town’s current FY20 MVP Project, which plans for ecological restoration and infrastructure improvements at the Sword Street crossing over Kettle Brook.

2020 MVP Action Grant project

Develop Protection Measures for Vulnerable Drinking Water Supply Areas and Evaluate

In 2019, the Town of Auburn, working in partnership with the Auburn Water District, received an MVP Action Grant to complete an in-depth evaluation of stormwater contamination susceptibilities within town to better protect the public’s drinking water supply.  A team of individuals from the Auburn Water District and a number of Town departments including the Water District, Department of Public Works, Planning Department, and Town Manager’s Office was assembled to oversee the development of the project.  Professionals from both Resilient Civil Engineering, P.C. and Fuss & O’Neill, Inc. were also part of the project team.

Sword Street at Kettle Brook Green Bridge Concept Design

FY20 MVP Action Grant was based on the Town’s critical need to replace the existing culverted crossing on Sword Street over Kettle Brook given its current condition, importance in the Town’s transportation network, and vulnerability to increases in precipitation as a result of climate change. The Town was also interested potentially incorporating “green” infrastructure and nature-based solutions into the future design. As such, the task included the completion of preliminary field investigations as well as development of conceptual “green” bridge designs for the future culvert replacement. Preliminary field investigations included
wetlands resource delineation, topographical survey, and geotechnical investigations.

2019 MVP Planning Grant Project

The Auburn MVP workshop utilized the Community Resilience Building framework developed by The Nature Conservancy and adopted by the State for this planning initiative.  The Workshop’s central objectives were to:

  • Define top local natural and climate-related hazards of concern
  • Identify existing and future strengths and vulnerabilities
  • Develop prioritized actions for the community
  • Identify immediate opportunities to collaboratively advance actions to increase resilience.
